How do you determine your hair type?

Looking at your hair type can help you decide how to maintain, cut, or style your hair for better results. Hair type means understanding the different characteristics of hair. In terms of density, texture, porosity (hair’s ability to retain moisture), elasticity, and wavy style. Your stylist can use the results of your hair type to recommend the best hairstyle, hair color, and hair care products for your hair.

Method 1

Consider the density of the hair.

1
Look in the mirror and part your hair down the middle of your head. Use your fingers or a comb to divide your hair into two parts Use bobby pins to secure it to one side in case it doesn’t overlap.

2

Hold one of the split hairs in your hand. Move that handful of hair back and forth so you can see the roots from different angles.

  1. 3

Evaluate your hair density. Hair density is the amount of hair covered on your head. Look at the roots of the hair and scalp. How much scalp can you see within a square inch of space?

    • You don’t have to sit and count each individual hair. But you can tell how thick your hair is by looking at your scalp.
    • Thick hair  : If the scalp is barely visible, show that you have hair
    • Medium hair  : If you can see the scalp. You have medium hair
    • Thinning hair  : If you see a lot of scalp, it means that your hair is thinning.

    4

Check out another spot on your head. Use the same method on other areas of your head. Hair density may vary from point to point.

    • Get a friend to help you look at the occipital area. Have him take a picture of you so you can see it better.
way2

Look at the texture/diameter of the hair.

  1. 1

Wash your hair  and use your regular shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair as you always do. Rinse out the shampoo and conditioner completely.

    • Choose a time when you don’t exercise or engage in sweaty activities that can distort the effect.
  2. 2
Let your hair dry. Using a hair dryer will change your hair’s response at that time. So it is better to use a towel to wipe and let it dry on its own.
  3. 3
Cut about 6-8 inches of sewing thread,  and choose regular thread instead of thicker sewing thread.
  4. 4

Pull out a strand of dry hair. Try to pull out all the strands, not the hair broken in half. Want to see how thick the hair is? Therefore, you should choose the hair that best represents the entire head of hair. Straight hair on top of the head is probably the best representation.

    • Hair should be dry and free of hair care products. It is best not to use it to get the most realistic results.
  5. 5
Lay the thread and hair side by side on white paper. Use white paper to make it easier to compare the hair to the thread  [1].
  6. 6

Compare hair to thread. Look closely at the hair using a magnifying glass. If it’s very curly, stretch it out a bit before you compare it to the thread. Alternatively, tie back the end of the hair and thread it into place.

    • Thin hair  : If the hair is thinner than a thread, you have thin hair
    • Medium thick hair  : If the hair is of the same thickness as the strands. You have medium thick hair.
    • Thick hair  : If the hair is thicker than the thread, you have thick hair
way3

Look at the porosity of the hair.

  1. 1
Wash your hair  and use your regular shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair as you always do. Make sure you rinse out all of your shampoo and conditioner.
  2. 2
Use a towel to dry your hair. Run your hair through it first, then pass a soft towel or a clean t-shirt and press it gently through your hair. Don’t let it dry out too much.
  3. Otherwise, you won’t be able to test your hair’s porosity or moisture retention.
  4. 3

Feel the hair on your hand. Take a handful of hair in your hand and touch it from root to tip. Squeeze it a little to feel the moisture.

    • Low porosity hair  : If your hair is almost dry. It appears that the hair does not retain moisture well. and have low porosity  [2].
    • Medium-bore hair  : If your hair is still moderately damp and not clumping together.
    • Then it retains a medium amount of moisture and you have medium porosity.
    • High porosity hair  : If the hair is wet and sticks together like water, it takes a long time for the hair to dry. Show that you have high porosity. The hair retains a lot of moisture.
  5. 4

Put your hair up in a large basin. Pull out a strand of hair and let it float in the bathtub. Make sure the basin is large enough so that your hair doesn’t touch the rim. Notice what happens to the hair  [3].

    • Low porosity hair  : If the hair floats and tends not to sink at all. have low porosity
    • Medium porosity hair  : hair sinks in over time. It indicates that you have moderate porosity
    • High porosity hair  : If the hair quickly sinks to the bottom of the bowl, you have high porosity.
  6. 5
Test your hair again on another day. The weather affects the hair, for example if the air humidity is high. Your hair may react differently to a dry day.

Look at the oiliness of the hair

  1. 1

Wash your hair  and use your regular shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair as you always do. Make sure you rinse out all of your shampoo and conditioner.

    • Choose a time when you don’t exercise or engage in sweaty activities that can distort the effect.
  2. 2

Let your hair dry. Using a hair dryer will change your hair’s response at that time. So it is better to use a towel to wipe and let it dry on its own.

    • Do not add any hair care products to it, as it may distort the effect.
  3. 3
Leave your hair overnight and give your scalp and hair time (about 8-12 hours) to produce oil. Which will allow you to test

  4. 4

check it out. In the morning, take a tissue and press it on the top of your scalp. Do not rub the paper back and forth. Just press down gently. Scalp press it directly behind the ear again  [4].

    • Oily hair  : If the tissue paper has greasy stains, it shows that you are her hair
    • Medium hair  : If you can see some traces of oil on the tissue paper. You have medium hair
    • Dry hair  : If nothing sticks to the tissue paper at all. Show that your hair is dry
    • Mixed hair  : In the event that there are no greasy spots at all, but the other place has a lot of oily spots. It appears that you have mixed hair.
  5. 5
Test again another day. The weather affects the hair, for example if the air humidity is high. Your hair may react differently to a dry day.
way5

Flexibility test

  1. 1

Pull out one strand of dry hair. Hair that has just been washed and dried gives the best test results. Try to pull the hair out to the fullest. Not the broken hair in the middle.

    • Hair should be dry and free of hair care products. It is best not to use it to get the most realistic results.
  2. 2

Makes your hair smooth. Grasp the ends of the hair with your hands and pull it slowly, pulling it tightly.

    • Don’t pull and pull it too fast or it will break your hair. Eventually the hair will break. But you want to see how far it can stretch before it breaks  [5].
  3. 3

Notice what happens to your hair when you straighten it. Notice if it stretches like rubber and when it breaks. Highly elastic hair can be stretched to 50% of its original length before it breaks.

    • Hair is very elastic  : if you can stretch your hair before it breaks. Your hair is very strong and resilient.
    • Moderately Elastic Hair  : If you straighten your hair moderately and break it. Your hair has moderate elasticity.
    • Poor hair elasticity  : If the hair breaks almost immediately after straightening. Your hair has low elasticity and is not as strong. Hair may stretch like gum. And when it breaks, it may wrinkle
  4. 4
Test hair from another part of your head. Hair may have different elasticity in different areas of the head. If you initially pulled the hair from the crown of your head, try pulling a strand of hair from behind the ear or the nape of your neck to test it.

Consider the wavy hair style.
  1. 1
Wash your hair  and use your regular shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair as you always do. Make sure you rinse out all of your shampoo and conditioner.

    2
Let your hair dry. Using a hair dryer can change the way your hair responds over time.
  2. Therefore, it is best to use a towel and let your hair air dry.
  3. 3

Look at the wavy pattern of your hair. Andre Walker, Oprah Winfrey’s hairstylist created a system to determine hair type based on the size and pattern of her curls. [6]  Hair types range from straight to curly.

    • 1 (Straight)  : The hair does not frizz at all.
    • 2 (Curly)  : The hair is curly, but not too curly.
    • 3 (Wavy)  : Hair curls in an S shape and retains its curl even when no styling products are used  [7].
    • 4 (Curly)  : The hair is curled or curled in the shape of the letter Z  [8]  . It can be stretched and when released it returns to its original curl. Type 4 hair can be shortened by up to 75% of its weight. length  [9]

  4. 4

Explore hair subtypes. Notice the part of the hair used as representation. Look at the thickness and pattern of the curl. (If you have curly hair)  [10] [11] [12]  This is also from Andre’s system. Walker also classified poetry into four types and three subgenres each.

    • 1a  : The hair is soft and can’t be permed.
    • 1b  : The hair is not curly but has more volume.
    • Grade 1  : The hair is not curly and somewhat coarse.
    • curl types
    • 2a  : The hair is S-shaped and coarse.
    • 2b  : My hair tends to get frizzy.
    • 2C  : My hair tends to curl into thick curls. It is the toughest of its kind
    • 3a  : The diameter of the curl is about the same as that of a chalk stick. or some wavy
    • 3b  : The diameter of the curl is the same as that of the magic pen. or medium wavy
    • 3C  : The diameter of the curl is about the same as that of a pencil. or wavy like a curl
    • 4a  : narrow curly hair, about the diameter of a needle.
    • 4B  : Z-shaped curly hair
    • 4C  : There is probably no curly pattern in this type of hair at all. It will zigzag so hard that it won’t form. So it is difficult to define.
  5. 5

Compare poetry to the LOIS system  . He will compare hair to the letters L (bent), O (curly), I (straight), and S (wavy  . I and S

    • L  : The hair resembles the letter L, with right angles, curved corners, and an inward curl. This is curly curly hair.
    • O  : The hair looks like the letter O or curled into several O’s.
    • The first  : straight hair with almost no curl. Similar to the first letter
    • S  : Curly hair that looks like the letter S.
    • Combination  : Poetry contains a combination of two or more characters.
    • If so, check the hair again from
    • other parts of the head to see which characters are most dominant.
